Purchasing a Photograph

What's for Sale
The photographs displayed on this website can be purchased in different sizes (A to E).  They can be purchased as (1) prints only, or (2) prints that are matted and ready to be put into a frame, or (3) completely matted, framed, and ready for hanging.

Lead-Times
If the item you wish to purchase is on-hand at the Kona International Market, we will ship within 48 hours.  If not on-hand, an order is printed when ordered, and there is a normal order-to-shipment lead-time of one week for an unmatted print for printing and curing the print.  For a matted and/or framed print there is an additional week for the matting and/or framing, for a total normal lead-time of two weeks.

Sales and Customer Service
You can contact me via e-mail at brucehophotography@hawaii.rr.com, or via phone at 808-345-2900.  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have and help you in making a purchasing decision.  I will replace any product that arrives damaged, but I cannot offer to replace at no charge a product that has been damaged by the customer.

Equipment and Processes
The photographs are taken with medium and large format film cameras and a Digital SLR. The film photographs have been scanned by an Epson V750 Pro flatbed scanner or a Tango drum scanner.  The scanned images are adjusted in Photoshop to remove "noise" and color casts inherent in the film or introduced by the scanner (or photographer), and also processed by a separate grain-reduction software program.  The Digital SLR images require considerably less processing of noise and color casts.  Adjustments in Photoshop to light/dark balances and color tones and intensity have also been made to most of the images.  The prints are made on an Epson Stylus Pro 7800 printer using Epson's Premium Luster paper.  The resulting prints have excellent color depth, accuracy, and longevity.

Unmatted Print
Purchasing an unmatted print will give you maximum control over the style of the mounting, matting, and framing of the photograph.  However, an unprotected, unmatted print is susceptible to soiling, marring, or creasing if not handled with care in a clean environment.  This is especially true with larger print sizes.  If the print is to be framed, a safe approach would be to give it to the framer (if that’s someone other than yourself) without removing it from its shipment packaging.

Matted (and Mounted)
A matted print is sandwiched between the mounting board, which provides a smooth, solid surface to protect the back of the print, and the front or “over” mat, which has an appropriately sized opening or window through which the image is displayed.
It is easier to handle than an unmatted one, as you can grasp the semi-rigid mounting board and mat, and a matted print allows you to select whatever frame and glazing (glass or acrylic cover for the picture) you wish.  If you are doing the framing yourself and are not an experienced framer, try to perform the work in a clean, dust-free environment to ensure you are happy with the results.

I use Bainbridge’s Alpharag in Antique White, a conservation-quality matboard in a light beige tone.

Mounting on Adhesive Board
To guarantee the flatness of the print, items in our Kona store in sizes A through C are permanently mounted with adhesive on archival-quality acid-free mount boards.  This fixes the entire back surface of the photograph to the board.

A framer in your area can likely use a traditional dry-mount process, which I do not use.

Hinge Mounting the Print
For sizes D and E, or on request for the smaller sizes, prints are attached to an acid-free mounting board (AlphaMat Archival Foam Core) with two or three “T-Hinges” made of tape with a water-soluble adhesive.  This is considered “reversible,” as the tape is removable (with water) without damage to the print.  While this supports the long-term preservation of the print, the hinge points are sometimes detectable by the way the print’s weight is distributed  Additionally, fluctuations in humidity and temperature can cause the print to expand and contract, which may produce a noticeable, though likely temporary, unevenness in the print's surface.  Some slight surface unevenness in prints that are hung with hinges is usually considered acceptable by owners who value the reversibility of the print’s mounting more than its being perfectly flat.

Humidity and temperature differences between my home studio in Holualoa and your environment may contribute to unevenness in the print.  Purchasing a print only, and having it framed by a framer in your area can reduce this environmental risk.

Framed
For framing I use a simple aluminum frame (currently Nielsen Profile 25 in German Silver) and clear acrylic for glazing.  The weight and susceptibility to breaking of glass make it prohibitive to ship from Hawaii.  Clear acrylic exhibits some glare, but non-glare or matte-finish acrylic causes a loss of crispness in the image, so I prefer the clear.  The acrylic should be maintained with a soft, lint-free cloth (a clean micro fiber cloth is ideal) to avoid scratching, and a quality plastic polish such as Novus 1, which will both clean and help control the buildup of static electricity on the acrylic.
